AC Running but the Home Is Not Cooling
When an air conditioner seems to be running but the house is still uncomfortable, start with simple observations that do not require opening equipment. These steps cannot identify the cause, but they can help you describe what you are noticing when you request service.

Simple observations only.
Do not remove equipment panels, work around wiring, or attempt repairs. If a step does not feel safe or familiar, skip it.
- Confirm the thermostat is set to cool and that the set temperature is below the current indoor temperature.
- Make sure supply and return vents are open and not blocked by furniture, rugs, or stored items.
- If you know where the filter is and can change it safely, check whether it looks loaded with dust or debris.
- Look around the outdoor equipment for leaves, grass clippings, or stored items that may be restricting airflow. Do not remove panels or reach into the unit.
When to call a technician
Leave diagnosis and repairs to a professional.
These signs are a good reason to stop at safe observation and request HVAC service.
- The system keeps running but the indoor temperature is not improving after the basic checks.
- You see ice, water where it should not be, damaged wiring, smoke, or a burning smell.
- A breaker trips repeatedly, equipment starts and stops often, or you hear a new loud or concerning sound.
