When to Replace an HVAC Filter
A filter does not need to follow the same calendar for every home. Its condition can change with the filter type, household activity, pets, and how often the system runs. A quick visual check is usually more useful than replacing it on a fixed schedule alone.

Do not remove equipment panels, work around wiring, or attempt repairs. If a step does not feel safe or familiar, skip it.
- Check the filter about once a month so you can see how quickly it collects dust.
- Replace a disposable filter when it looks visibly loaded or when the manufacturer guidance calls for replacement.
- Use the size and airflow direction printed on the existing filter or equipment label; do not force a filter that does not fit.
- Turn the system off before changing a filter if the equipment instructions call for it, and keep the access area clear.
